While we recognize and honor the challenges of a gender binary definition of \u201cmale\u201d and \u201cfemale,\u201d many of the nuances in bipolar disorder symptoms in females relate to reproductive hormones operating since birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of unique features of bipolar disorder in females. Those with bipolar disorder experience episodes of mania (elevated moods and emotional highs), and depressive episodes (emotional lows and depressed moods). These episodes, whether manic or depressive, will govern the symptoms that an individual may experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/our-medications\/abilify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manic symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling jumpy or wired<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased need for sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling unusually important or powerful<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling like you can do multiple things you wouldn\u2019t typically do all at once<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor judgment or engaging in risky behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racing thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid speech about many different topics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of bipolar depressive episodes can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling bad about yourself\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating more than usual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling hopeless, worthless, or helpless<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little interest in activities you usually enjoy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping too much or too little<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts or ideas of self-harm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, bipolar disorder is categorized into one of several major types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar I is defined by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/bipolar-disorder#:~:text=Bipolar%20I%20Disorder%E2%80%94%20defined%20by,lasting%20at%20least%202%20weeks.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cmanic episodes that last at least 7 days, or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care. Usually, depressive episodes occur as well, typically lasting at least 2 weeks. Episodes of depression with mixed features (having depressive symptoms and manic symptoms at the same time) are also possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar II is similar, except that it does not feature manic episodes. Instead, bipolar disorder II symptoms in females and males tend to include \u201chypomanic\u201d episodes which are shorter and less severe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who experience symptoms of bipolar disorder who do not quite meet the criteria for a diagnosis of bipolar I or II may be diagnosed with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/blog\/what-is-the-difference-between-bipolar-i-and-bipolar-ii\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclothymic disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other unspecified bipolar disorder. Cyclothymic disorder is often seen as a less severe version of bipolar disorder, but the symptoms persist across years and can still be highly disruptive to one\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder symptoms in females<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, bipolar disorder symptoms in females were dismissed and disregarded by physicians. Medical providers may improperly treat females with regard to bipolar II due to inaccurate and stereotypical portrayals of women that portray them as regularly experiencing fluctuating moods. It\u2019s very important for mental health professionals to be aware of any potential biases in this regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/mental-health\/mental-health-conditions\/bipolar-disorder-manic-depressive-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Department of Health\u2019s Office on Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains that females with bipolar disorder are \u201cmore likely than men with bipolar disorder to have other physical and mental health conditions, including problems with alcohol use, depression caused by bipolar disorder, thyroid disease, obesity caused by medicines that treat bipolar disorder, and migraine headaches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it\u2019s also vital that individuals and family members recognize the signs of bipolar, here are some nuances in its presentation in females to watch for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often depression first<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4539870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Indian Journal of Psychiatry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cMany female bipolar patients initially present with depressive symptoms, that is why many times they are misdiagnosed.\u201d It is not uncommon for females to be treated for other depressive disorders instead of bipolar disorder. This also results in females being more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar II.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid cycles<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned above, bipolar II is characterized by rapid cycling between depressive lows and hypomanic highs. There seems to be a strong correlation between these mood cycles and a female\u2019s hormonal cycles. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/mental-health\/mental-health-conditions\/bipolar-disorder-manic-depressive-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Department of Health\u2019s Office on Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201cChanging hormones during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause can affect how severe a woman&#8217;s bipolar disorder is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later onset<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Females tend to see a later onset of bipolar disorder symptoms than males do, with most diagnoses happening in their late twenties. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4539870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies are uncertain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why this is the case, it may have a good deal to do with the stereotyped notion that bipolar disorder symptoms in teenage females are frequently seen as \u201cnormal\u201d behavior. This may be particularly the case with symptoms of bipolar II.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for bipolar disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment is often very successful in helping manage bipolar disorder symptoms in females. Treatment generally involves a combination of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/medication-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapy and medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Medication for bipolar disorders might include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/our-medications\/lamotrigine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mood stabilizers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightside.com\/our-medications\/abilify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-generation antipsychotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of a support network<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to professional treatment, social support is an important element for managing bipolar disorder symptoms in teenage and adult women.
